The world's richest person, Elon Musk's father, has stated that his son is interested in buying the English Premier League club, Liverpool.

The U.S.-based sports conglomerate Fenway Sports Group acquired Liverpool in 2010. In the past, the company has sought external investment for Liverpool, but has never considered fully selling the club. However, Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk, mentioned that he was asked whether his son was interested in buying the Anfield club.

In an interview with Times Radio, Errol Musk revealed that his son Elon, the CEO of the U.S. automotive and clean energy company Tesla, is interested in buying the six-time European champions. He said, "I can't comment on this, because then Fenway will increase the price." When asked whether his son truly wants to buy Liverpool, Errol responded, "Yes, of course. But that doesn't mean he's going to buy it. Yes, he wants to, of course. Who wouldn't? I want to as well."

The Associated Press (AP) contacted a spokesperson for Fenway, who stated, "There is no basis for this rumor."

In a survey conducted by the U.S.-based business and trade magazine Forbes last May, Liverpool FC was identified as the fourth most valuable football club in the world. The club's estimated value was £4.43 billion. However, this amount is just over 1% of Elon Musk's total net worth. The British media outlet The Guardian reported that Elon Musk's total net worth is £34.3 billion.

Elon Musk has stated that the Musk family has a familial connection to the city of Liverpool in England. This is why his son is interested in buying the club. "His (Elon Musk's) grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have some relatives in Liverpool. We are fortunate that we had a close relationship with the members of The Beatles. They grew up with some members of our family. So, we have a special connection with Liverpool."

Fenway Sports Group has been criticized by some Liverpool supporters for the lack of investment in the squad. Last year, the club reported a loss of £9 million (non-operating). The financial results for the past season will be revealed next month, but there is a higher likelihood of a loss due to the failure to win the Champions League. In September 2023, Fenway sold some shares of Liverpool to the U.S. investment firm Dynasty Equity. At that time, President Mike Gordon stated that Fenway's long-term relationship with Liverpool was "stronger than ever."

Under Fenway's ownership, Liverpool has restored its success. After 30 years, the club won the English top league title in the 2019-20 season. In the 2018-19 season, they won the Champions League. Currently, Liverpool is at the top of the English Premier League table with 46 points from 19 matches.
