The BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has arrived in London, United Kingdom, for advanced medical treatment.
Today, Wednesday, at 9:05 AM local time, the plane carrying Khaleda Zia landed at London's Heathrow Airport.
Her elder son, BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, and daughter-in-law Zubaida Rahman were present at the airport to welcome Khaleda Zia.
Bangladesh's Acting High Commissioner, Hazrat Ali Khan, welcomed Khaleda Zia at the airport with flowers.
The BNP chairperson last visited London on July 15, 2017. Since then, she has not made any foreign trips. During this time, she has not had a direct meeting with her son, Tarique Rahman.
To welcome Khaleda Zia, many leaders and activists, including the president of the UK BNP, MA Malek, and the general secretary, Koyser M. Ahmed, were present at the airport. After completing the immigration procedures, it has been reported that Khaleda Zia will leave the airport through the fourth terminal's Royal VIP gate and proceed directly to the hospital by ambulance.
On behalf of the BNP, it has already been announced that Khaleda Zia will be admitted to the 'London Clinic'. After receiving treatment there for a few days, she will be treated at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Maryland, USA.
On Tuesday night at 11:46 PM, Khaleda Zia departed for London from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport aboard a special air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar. At the airport, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior party leaders bid her farewell.
Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister, has been suffering from severe physical ailments for a long time, including liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. After being sentenced in a corruption case in 2018 and imprisoned, her health worsened, and she faced several life-threatening situations. In this condition, her party and family requested the government for permission to seek medical treatment abroad, but the government did not respond.
Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 due to a popular uprising, Khaleda Zia was released under a presidential order. Subsequently, the court annulled the verdict in the ongoing corruption cases against her.
In October 2023, under the supervision of three specialist doctors from Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States, Khaleda Zia underwent a successful operation on her blood vessels in Dhaka.
Her doctors have stated that a liver transplant has become crucial due to her liver cirrhosis. It is anticipated that the entire treatment process could take around two months after the liver transplant.
According to party sources, once the treatment is completed, the BNP Chairperson will return to London. From there, she may go to Saudi Arabia to perform the sacred Umrah, and then return to the country afterward.
